OP-ED CONTRIBUTOR
Unlikely Breast Friend
By Lady Macbeth
Oh, please. Is that the gunfire of another Mommy World War I hear?
Like every other strong-minded woman, I read the "Are You Mom Enough?" article in Time, and many of the subsequent opinion pieces that followed. I agree that attachment parenting seems like nothing more than a sentimental exercise for weak-willed women. Not to mention the fact that all that milk isn't good for a male baby (unless he's just a lost cause to begin with). I had to turn off the recent interview with Dr. Sears on NPR because it made me sick to my stomach. That said, I also think that we're underestimating these chronically suckled women. Are they slavishly following a patriarchal doctrine? Or are they, rather ingeniously, using "attachment parenting" as a cover for what they're really doing: keeping their kids under surveillance for as long as possible? Take away their mumbo-jumbo, and you've got some ladies who can exact violent, un-maternal behavior at their whim. The lady who's figured out how to keep people right where she wants them? That's my unlikely breast friend.
Note: The views expressed here by Lady Macbeth do not necessarily reflect those of Everyday Shakespeare. In fact, they don't at all.
