Shakespeare at Large
I knew it, I just knew it. That band Mumford and Sons is so cool that I KNEW they must have a connection to Shakespeare. Here's what I discovered today:
--The title of their album "Sigh No More" is a reference to Much Ado About Nothing, and the song of the same name includes the line "One foot in sea and one on shore." Both come from Balthasar's song in 2.3:
Sigh no more, ladies, sigh no more,
Men were deceivers ever,
One foot in sea and one on shore,
To one thing constant never:
Then sigh not so, but let them go,
And be you blithe and bonny,
Converting all your sounds of woe
Into Hey nonny, nonny.
Sing no more ditties, sing no moe,
Of dumps so dull and heavy;
The fraud of men was ever so,
Since summer first was leafy:
Then sigh not so, & c.
--They claim that the song "Roll Away Your Stone" is inspired by Macbeth. Here's a sample of the lyrics:
The darkness is a harsh term don’t you think?
And yet it dominates the things I seek
The darkness is a harsh term don’t you think?
And yet it dominates the things I seek
The darkness is a harsh term don’t you think?
And yet it dominates the things I seek
Um, I don't get it yet but maybe you will. Have a listen:

This makes me SO happy, too, Michelle! Mumford & Sons has been the soundtrack to my life since their album first came out, and now you tell me they're even more literate than I imagined?! I think I'll be taking down my Kenny Chesney posters.
ReplyDeleteThey're playing with Dylan at the Grammy's this Sunday, by the way.
