For James Franco: A Sonnet
on occasion of Manohla Dargis's critical acclaim for Rise of the Planet of the Apes
Look in thy glass, and tell the face thou viewest
Now is the time to play that acting role;
The more strange and random, the more we are blest;
Or will you go, alone, to brood upon a grassy knoll?
O! Thou dost beguile the world, unbless your fans,
Should you sustain us not with poets and a sad climber,
hot performance artists, and James Dean deadpans.
I beg of you, stay, enchanted rhymer!
Poet of the earth, the stars, and network TV,
Thou knowest all emotions, joyous and sad.
So thou knowest humanity, and it knowest thee.
Thus of your manic disposition, I am glad.
Congrats on your Planet of the Apes.
Your doubters are just eaters of sour grapes.
