Suburbs of Our Discontent
Let's see . . . did anything interesting happen this weekend? I mean, besides Kate + William and Osama Bin Laden?
Actually, it's kind of impossible to talk (or think) about anything else, so I won't even try. Here are my thoughts right now, including the Shakespeare ones:
1) Obama was really awesome last night.
2) If Bin Laden was a Shakespeare character, who would he be?
3) When compared to Bin Laden, Shakespeare's "bad" characters actually seem kind of mild and sympathetic, so I can't answer that question.
4) How does Shakespeare's conception of "evil" compare to our own?
5) Death is very one-on-one and intimate in Shakespeare's plays, even if it happens offstage. What would he do with the mass experience of 9/11?
6) It's sort of like the Plague.
7) No, it's not.
8) I've got it. Shakespeare really understood that yicky mix of tragic memories and satisfying vengeance.
