Goneril: Hear me, my lord.
What need you five-and-twenty, ten, or five,
To follow in a house where twice so many
Have a command to tend you?
Regan: What need one?
Lear: O, reason not the need!
(King Lear 2.4)
Ever since I first read King Lear, I sympathized with Goneril and Regan for the first few acts. I mean, their father is a domineering, needy guy who just shows up in their homes and expects to throw all of his power around. I totally got why they wanted him to pare down his entourage.
But now that I'm what I like to think of as master of my own little kingdom, I'm switching allegiances.
Especially since I tried to find the season premiere of "Mad Men" on my DVR last night and instead found 15 episodes of "House of Anubis" and 8 hours of "Spring Training Highlights." My kids (including the 7-year-old) have figured out how to manipulate the Series Manager function and have infected my kingdom of viewing pleasure with their leprous tastes.
They didn't leave me one little show. Not one.
O, reason not the need!
